Grappling with Global Uncertainty

Akhil ·

In modern times, we are striving to cope with challenges on multiple fronts — geopolitics, the economy, climate change, and the erosion of mutual trust, among others. This is evident as globalisation appears to have reached its peak, with several social scientists even predicting the onset of an era of de-globalisation.

Every nation is facing challenges at multiple levels.

In the context of Bharat, we are among the most affected nations, owing to our large demographic population and relatively lower levels of industrial and overall development. This is reflected in various global indices, such as the Human Development Index, where India continues to fall under the lower-middle income group.

Global Challenges and Their Impact on India

  1. Russia-Ukraine Conflict — This conflict has hit lower-income countries hard. While the major blockade has primarily impacted Russia, it has also significantly affected the trade partners of both Russia and Ukraine.
  2. Middle East Conflict — This is impacting the global economy heavily through a surge in crude oil prices, with related decisions triggering economic instability in several countries, given the high stakes involved for the USA.
  3. Climate Change — This has become a secondary concern as other, more immediate challenges affect ease of living. Efforts by the UNFCCC and other major coalitions continue to falter due to a lack of on-ground progress and consensus.

The world is increasingly moving toward self-centred approaches to internal affairs. This is eroding the mutual trust that has shaped human civilisation since the emergence of humanity itself.
